We need to talk about the misuse/abuse of the ellipsis in certain situations. Because here’s the thing, if you use an ellipsis after a sentence that in no way warrants it (i.e, there is not a second part to your statement), whatever you said is going to sound about 10x creepier than you intended.
“Let’s hang out.” vs “Let’s hang out…”
“Thanks.” vs “Thanks…”
“I saw you yesterday.” vs “I saw you yesterday…”
“Hey gorgeous.” vs “Hey gorgeous…”
Whenever I see someone say things of this nature, I can’t help but ruminate on their potential future as a serial killer. Are you looking for a specific answer? Did you even mean that? Are those three, mysterious periods supposed to arouse my curiosity? I’m sorry, but I’m going to have to ask you to stop texting me because you’re actually creeping me the fuck out.
True. It annoys me that people badly use it. Ellipsis, quoting wikipedia, “indicate an intentional omission of a word in the original text. An ellipsis can also be used to indicate a pause in speech, an unfinished thought, or, at the end of a sentence, a trailing off into silence (aposiopesis). When placed at the end of a sentence, the ellipsis can also inspire a feeling of melancholy longing.”. Now, when people use in the end of simple sentences that have got no continuation, i start to think:
1) the person is annoyed/pissed of with me, what the hell I did wrong?!
2) the person isn’t interessed at all about what we are talking
3) i stare at the sentence trying to figure out what is the unfinished thought and what am i missing
Please use the three points properly. It will probably avoid some (probably many!) misunderstandings.
